Kohlberg's theory of Moral development may assist you in understanding. I am a fiscal conservative, and a libertarian. I don't believe we should legislate morality.
Many of "conservatives" you discuss are New Conservatives, that are a social phenomena, that came out of the involvement of religious activism. That said there are liberal theologians that act as liberal activists as well. In fact liberation theology have been around since the early 50s, the conservative theologians became active to counter the perceive moral degradation in our society.
As far as psychological influences our personality is formed by several key issues. Family being the largest influence, if a person is raised in a liberal family they will likely be liberal in their politics as they age, the same holds true for conservatism.
Other factors are social influences. When kids go to college they often want to become opposite of their parents.
I have two children, my wife is a dyed in the wool lib, I am an fiscal ultra-conservative.. The contrast of our views gives our children reasons to see both sides. While I disagree with my wife on many issues because of the lack of fiscal responsible leadership exercised by the liberals we agree that a person's behavior as long as it harms no one else should not be legislated.
Rational thought has little to do with issues when it relates to abortion, homosexuality.. both sides are irrational.
I believe that in order to help a person you don't give them SOME THING, you teach them how to get it for themselves. This is where liberals make mistakes. Give away programs reinforce psychological dependencies ON the System.
As far as the biochemistry, it is unlikely that there is a tie between moral development and synaptic actions. However, physiologically, key areas of the brain govern thoughts, and actions. The lack of logical processes on the part of liberals indicate their actions are tied to emotion..
I remember once someone told me to not act on emotion, but to think through the emotion. Emotional reactionary politics is a dangerous thing to do. People need to think through their emotions before taking action.

Although teh foundation for individual personality may be developed in very differnt ways the psychological profiel applying l/r brain techniques does not provide a deep enough investigation. You could always in turn remember that those who want to change will and those who don't won't. That is the truth, if you were going to develop a fully function political party that would use both left and right sides of their minds then you should brace yourself becausethe minds development is at it's height when you are a child, there for you would have to wrangle the task of ensuring that both sides of the brain were equally stimulated from childhood through adulthood. Great in theory but lousy in practise. Good Luck!

I disagree with the brain makeup aspect . If that was the case -how would you explain a democrat all their lives, changing parties to republican ? Also-it is the other way around- re: conservatives" wanting more government". It's the liberals who want to convince others, that they aren't capable of making it on their own without government help . Republicans want you to help yourself and become successful-( such as..not live a life of welfare ).Liberals would have you depend on them ; to see that you get "it "-they make you think you NEED them because of your NEEDINESS . Republicans are under the impression that we do not NEED a political party to make something of ourselves-whereas liberals make it a practice to preach to the poor how much they need them to get along in life . Republicans know that you are quite capable of running your own life - while democrats know you are not .If it were a mere matter of "brain makeup" , many democrats would not be jumping ship , to become republicans when the party began to divide into the far left realms of socialist / communist attitudes .

For over a quarter century I wondered about the same question. It took many years of working with people to discover what the core difference is. To explain the subtle difference I must first explain that each one of us has a MIND that is quite separate from ones brain. The MIND consists of a subtle vibrational energy realm that is simultaneously existing with that of the physical body, It is in ones MIND where the difference between the liberal and conservative resides.
The difference is one of repressed fear, and the degree to which one is able to acknowledge this fear. The fear is of ones core energy.... and this is taken on in earliest childhood. The liberal-type personality has a greater need to deny this fear than does the conservative-type personality. This fear consists of Yang, or male energy...or the outgoing and forceful energy which lies dormant within each of us.
The L-TP [Liberal-Type Personality] fears the rising of this fear within him/herself, and the MIND of the L-TP engages a number of patterns to divert this Yang energy into Yin energy [female type expressions] such as thinking about, worrying about, talking about, and seeking governmental help for people, places, and things outside the L-TP. This simplistic explanation does not pretend to detail the subtlety of this difference, but simply suggests the deeply repressed causal motivation for those generalized differences we all notice. Peace
