A Cruel Hunt That Must Be Stopped
Canada's annual seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. This year the Canadian government allowed fishermen to club and shoot more than 330,000 baby seals in the North Atlantic, just to earn a few extra bucks by selling seal skins. Last year, 98.5% of the seals killed were two months of age or younger—and veterinary reports indicate that many seals have been skinned while still conscious and able to feel pain.
Is the Seal Hunt Cruel?
Yes. In 2001, a report by an independent team of veterinarians who studied the hunt concluded that governmental regulations regarding humane killing were neither being respected nor enforced, and that the seal hunt failed to comply with Canada's basic animal welfare standards. Shockingly, the veterinarians found that in 42% of the cases they studied, the seals had likely been skinned alive while conscious.

Thanks for getting the word out!

I've been boycotting Canadian seafood for the last 3-4 years because of their annual seal hunt. I've protested outside of Red Lobster, my favorite restaurant, because they serve and therefore support the Canadian seafood industry. I haven't eaten there for the past 3-4 years as well. I think it's something like, Red Lobster supports a third of the Canadian seafood industry....some big number.

Anyways, I'm dying for some king crab legs, but I can't until the seal hunt is abolished. Please speak out everybody!! Help us stop this horrible practice!

1. E-mail petitions are garbage- they accomplish nothing besides a short-lived 'feels good' glow. REAL petitions MIGHT help.

2. As non-Canadians, most of us cannot offer much leverage against the Canadian government about this, but writing them (with pen and paper) is a million times more effective than electronic communications (this is also true in the US, etc.!)

3. What would you like us to do? Boycott something? Almost none of us ever buy seal products, yet that does not seem to have stopped them.

I have yet to see anyone offer a REAL solution to this- so this is basically rabble-rousing. Building awareness? We already know that things like this happen.

4. Worse things than this are happening in your town. Ever researched dog or [male chicken] fights? They happen all over, and this is something you CAN fight. Do you?

I am always rather concerned about people who get all up in arms over events that really do not touch their lives- like seal hunts- but cannot be bothered about events they CAN affect, like poverty or dog fights in their community.

Good luck on your issue.

By the way... I volunteer for the Red Cross (donor, instructor), work for and with animals, spend time helping kids other than just my own, help raise money for several local charities, and try to help people on-line.

Besides posting tragic scenarios, what do you do to help out?

Not trying to blow my own horn, but if you are trying to stir people to action, are you in a position to lead by example?

we are actually not considerate everywhere on earth, we are animals and we are on the precise of the nutrition chain. There are sturdy motives to cull the seals because of the fact it makes money. Like slaughtering cows, pigs, and chicken; there is money in it. people who're doing the jobs are airborne dirt and airborne dirt and dirt undesirable adult males who're in seek of for some skill of available nutrition and forex to help in helping their families. human beings from around the area purchase the pelts and the beef is used for food. so some distance as i'm in touch it is criminal and ethical, this is a factor of Canadian history and there is no longer a damned undertaking you nor anybody else can do approximately it......... no longer a damned undertaking.

It makes me sick.

Canada is supposed to be a liberal, peaceful, nice country. I don't know about canadians, but their government clearly isn't!

It's stupid to make laws & regulations regarding humane killing and then failing to enforce them and allowing every year this cruel act of carnage.

And not only in Canada, but everywhere it's the same with cows, chickens, you name it. Skinned alive, chopped up alove, tortured alive....

And then people complain about how violent our society is and all that. It's not just the video games, you know...

They should round up all of the people (if you can call them that) line them up and shoot the f----- lot. In fact, I would be the first to volunteer to do the job, even if it meant prison afterwards, or the electric chair. I would still do it.

Yeah I have heard this and get many emails about it. I have signed many petitions to fight against it. Sadly this is how people have been making money for centuries... and money talks. Keep informing people and keep fighting! Good job!
