Of course BlowSox fans think he is the greatest player alive, but real baseball people know he's an overrated, fat, steroid-gobbling fool that would not be playing if it were not for the designated hitter rule in the American League.... back in my day, this fat fool would not even be playing at all...

Craig S. Wake up and smell the beer... Poopdeck Pappy couldn't handle it physically if he had to play in the field every day... he is a fat, out of shape slob and his body couldn't handle it... he would be on the DL every season, and you would see his stats plummet... try and figure it out for yourself sometime, Sparky...

You forgot to mention the corked bat Ortiz uses in the 9th inning.
He homers like.. 2 out of every 4 chances in late-and-close situations. And like 1 out of 18 chances the rest of the time. I don't buy the clutch crap. He's got a special bat for the late and closes. Just like Sammy Sosa and Albert Belle did.

David Ortiz would not be considered "overrated" because he is having the season of his life. To consider the man Red Sox fans call "Papi" as "overrated" would be an insult.
I may not be a fan of the Red Sox, but I respect David for what he has achieved thus far. Perhaps you should direct your insults at someone else, like Bronx Bums owner George "I Don't Give A Damn What Anyone Thinks About My Yankees" Steinbrenner.
Perhaps you are one of those "baseball people" who have nothing better to do with your time than to direct putdowns and insults at some of baseball's best. I am sickened by your putdown of David Ortiz and any Red Sox fan would surely love to give you a well-deserved piece of their respective minds.
For you Red Sox fans out there, stand up for David Ortiz.

He can play the field and does often in interleague games, its not as if he cant play first, its just that the red sox have a better fielding first baseman in Youlkilis. As for being overrated, in walk-off situations in the past 3 years he has reached base 17 times in 19 plate appearances. He has a slugging % of over .600 in late innings of close games. He is the only person to hit two walk-off hits in a single day in the playoffs. He is clutch and pretty **** good even when the game is not on the line. As for insulting him due to his weight, do you really think that fat *** Babe Ruth was in any better shape? Finally, your steroid remarks: Go ahead and give me a few reasons why you think he took them, cus once you do, I'll make you look like a ******* fool just like all those other idiots slandering his work ethic on this site.

You sound like a grumpy old man who's been passed by today's game, and hardly a "real" baseball person. If you truly were, then you'd realize that Ortiz, even without playing in the field, is as valuable to his team as any player in the American League.
I agree that Red Sox fans go overboard for him at the expense of Manny Ramirez, but to say that Ortiz wouldn't be playing without the DH rule is ridiculous. All they'd do is throw him at first base, and live with his less-than-adequate glove. He'd still make up for those defensive shortcomings with his bat. Are you really that obtuse to think that a team like the Sox would rather have a glove guy like Mientkiewicz (as in 2004) than Ortiz at first, if the DH rule wasn't in existence? This obsession with guys playing the field instead of DHing makes no sense to me - the rule exists, and it's a good one, so people need to get over it.
If you're going to talk about overrated players, then I'd go with someone like Rocco Baldelli or Jeff Francoeur, not a top-10 or top-15 guy like Ortiz. It's tough to be overrated when you're jacking 50 homers with a huge OPS.
Alphonso - Looking at your previous threads, it's obvious you're just trying to get a rise from people regarding Ortiz. So, I guess I'll just save my breath from here on in.

the fact that he's 30 has only hit 30 or more homerun in a season 4 times has only hit 300 or better for a season twice and in 9 seasons has averaged 17 homeruns 66 RBI and bats 286 I think he is a little overrated

he's over rated as a player but man what a hitter, I remember Tom Kelly of the twins cringing when David tried to play 1st base with the twins, it was brutal & he weighed 40 pounds less then.

I figure you're a Yankees fan, so Papi is no more of a fat, out of shape, steroid gobbling fool who cant play the field than Giambi is.

No. He's not manny Ramirez is. He has to be leading outfielders in errors. Total 1 way player. I've seen him adjust his pants cuffs as balls go over his head.
