What place is more "manufactured experience"? What I mean by
that is patently fake and absurd "re-creations", like Epcots "World
Showplace" with fake facades, "natives" dancing in costumes that
people don't wear in the real countries(I don't think people go to
work in Munich dressed in Lederhosen, DW's Animal Kingdom,
with "habitats" so unreal that countless animals have died in them
(african habitats with artificial grass and trees), or how about Vegas, and the recreations of the Eiffel Tower, Venice, NY skyline,
The Pyramids, Castles, the wild west, and ancient rome, just for starters?
Is it more than a coincidence that these two, most artificial cities
in the US, are the two top tourist draws in the US as well? Should
we face the fact that tourists want manufactured experiences
over any real wonder of the real world? Do tourists prefer an IMAX
version of Germany, or people prancing around in lederhosen, to the real thing? Which city is more phony, VEGAS OR ORLANDO?

Excellent question to ponder. I like neither. I prefer Yellowstone, Grand Canyon to those, but I also like visiting historic sites and museums, so long as there is not too much commercialism associated with them.

Give me the littlest po-dunk museum over a casino, any day.

What?!? People in Germany don't wear lederhosen all the time? Well, that just blows my mind. I thought everything at Epcot was culturally accurate.

I think people who go on vacation like different experiences. Some prefer to experience the real Germany, France, Italy, etc. and others are just looking for an escape from reality and are satisfied with larger than life experiences that help them forget about the real world for awhile. Orlando and Vegas may be "fake" but I think they have a place in the world if you just take them for what they are - supersized playgrounds.

Of course both are manufactured, but the idea is to give people an idea of what its like in different countries and cultures. Sure the French dont wear berets on a daily basis, but thats just an item people associate with France. I'm sure if you went to another country, people would ask about American TV, celebs, or sports. Why? Because its what they have been exposed to.
So what if Orlando and LV capitilize on the fact that most Americans rarily get to travel outside our own borders? Why not at least give someone a chance to sample/experience soemthing that is merely a dream or may be unattainable?

I don't think I would use the words "phony", they are both entertainment cities, and "manufactured" creations should be expected.
