I have tried various methods with three pregancies and learned a valuable lesson: If your body is not ready to go into labor you will just succeed in giving yourself miserable light contractions for DAYS. You will lose sleep over them and may have bad diarrhea.

That being said, if your due date is past and you're sick of being pregnant, you can try one or more of the following. There are more dangerous methods but NOT recommended because they have such dangerous side affects and you don't want to hurt (overstimulate) your uterus or baby.
1) Pineapple juice. Drink a few small glasses. Eat a small amount of protein such as cheese or peanut butter in order to protect your blood sugar levels.
2) Rasberry tea or eating rasberries
3)Orgasm
4)Prayer/meditation
5)Warm relaxing baths. Funny: if you are in false labor this will slow down the Braxton Hicks but if you are in "real" early labor it may intensify the contractions.

Good luck. Call your midwife or doctor for more advice. In a few days you'll never have to think about this again for a long time.

I don't know what to tell you - except I have been trying Evening primrose oil (orally & inserted vaginally), SEX, walking, spicy food ... and nothing has worked thus far! I have been doing this for the past 3 weeks & no I am 38 weeks w/big baby (ultrasound yesterday put him at almost 8 lbs), and NO-GO yet! But I'm not giving up - still walking, having sex (okay-maybe not as much!) and taking the EPO. Cant hurt I guess! Good luck to you !

Labor is brought on by the opening of the cervix so...sex is a good option. I've also heard certain foods, such as mac chz and katsup-this didn't work for me. If you begin to have contractions, are not dilating, and begin to feel the pain is unbearable, most doctors will manually dilate you or administer petosin. If you become over-due and your doc does not induce you seek a second opinion.

I heard this from another mother who said she had success with this and tried it when I was so miserable with my last child (was in a wheel chair from 7 mos. to delivery because he was positioned in a way which caused tremendous pain in my hips so I could not stand).

I drank castor oil according to the directions on the bottle....it was so nasty I vomited the first time and then took more (gagging the entire time, I get the shivers even thinking about it) -- I do not know if this is safe but admit I did it and within a few hours regular contractions began which were intense, painful, and lasted for about 6 hours -- however, they stopped and I didn't even dialate. We tried sex and all the other popular myths -- nothing worked.

I tell you this as a WARNING to the things you may hear about here. You should check with your doctor as "wives tales" prevail; what works for one may not work for another; and you may inadvertantly damage your child in the process.

My advice is to call your triage nurse at the OB/GYN and talk to her. Before you call though, think about what you really want and why: are you feeling so bad you want to hurry up with it? are you in pain that is driving you crazy? are you tired, uncomfortable, unable to sleep? what is really going on? With this information the nurse can help you with a solution. Much of this is the universal experience of mothers in the last trimester of pregnancy. I was in so much pain my doctor gave me pain medication (darvocette -- which at that time showed no danger to the fetus -- not sure if that has changed). This sounds radical to some and many doctors would never consider this but my doctor graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke Medical School so I trusted his judgement and did some research. The pain medicine allowed me to not be in a constant state of stress which is infinitely better for the baby).

Think about why you want to speed-up delivery and ask about that instead of speeding up labor (which there aren't any ways that I know of (that are assured to be safe) which do not require medical supervision -- breaking water (puncturing amnio sac) and a pitocin IV are how they induced my labor with my last child one week prior to the delivery date because I was so miserable and the baby could survive outside the womb with-out the risk of complications).

Take care and I KNOW how hard the last few months/weeks/days are, but risking the health of your child is not a good idea. God bless and know that this is temporary and though the days drag along at this point take this opportunity to relax, pamper yourself and enjoy being able to sleep when YOU want to :O)

Sex (with orgasm from both parties) is one of the best ways. Also lots of walking, go bowling, anything particularly (but safely) active. If you're late, of course, you can go to the hospital and be induced, but you already know that. There are also herbal remedies--check out your local health food store. I've also heard castor oil helps. Good luck and may your baby be healthy and beautiful! Congrats!

Lots of sex with a man. There is a chemical in their semen that is called progestrone and that is what the synthic potocin is. Drink lots of water, walk and drink raspberry LEAF tea. Make sure thats it the leaves, not just raspberry flavored. Just remember that you will deliver sooner or later. You will never go past 42 weeks. Good luck...

Caesar salad -- they're a particular chemical in Romaine lettuce that's medically proven to induce labor.
