No, the unions did not decide what to make, but they did make it.

My coworkers who own Toyotas and Hondas have few if any issues the first 100000 milles. I've had my Mercury in 5 times before 70,000 for major repairs.

Maybe it is the designers fault. However, it is my guess that the union workers who assembled it screwed up too.

It's all about which part of the equation people focus on. You are correct that the auto makers ignored trends in developing more fuel efficient vehicles but you ignore the fact that unions, which were in the ascendant at the time, demanded better wages and benefits while sales were declining. The big three passed the increased costs off to consumers pricing American vehicles out of reach for some and putting off even more potential buyers. I think the big three are brain dead and stupid. The UAW is just greedy.

Besides, why should we pay a premium for generally inferior products that are now made in Mexico while Honda and Toyota are producing more "Japanese" cars in US factories?

Yeah if it wasn't for the union someone who sits around and tights a bolt wouldn't make $30.00 an hour. Maybe thats is why prices are so high?
But the problem with the sales is that the big three hasn't been focus on the economy all their slogan is bigger is better.
While Japanese are focus on hybrids and fuel economy.

There aren't any Unions with any voting power anymore. Reagan put the biggest dent to the UAW in the 80's, and it never recovered from it. The labor force is now 1/6'th of what it was 10 years ago is why Americans can't afford to pay the rising cost's without jobs to pay the price they want.

the falling sales of US made cars is because american made cars are a peice of sh*t. They keep breaking down and to expensive to run. The union has nothing to do with it.
