The medical community is pretty agreed that the quicker the better to get off of these things. Of course some amount of coffee is still allowed usually two cups of caffeinated a day with some decaf allowed too being careful to add nutritive beverages such as milk and juice to the diet. As far as I know research up till the 80's was inconclusive on the effects on the fetus of up to 10 cigarettes a day. Atleast there was no effect on birthweight with that level and birthweight has always been a big factor with cigarettes and babies. The vicotin I don't know about. Is she taking it for pain or is there a real addiction involved? There are painkillers available for pregnant women that don't pass through the placenta and hurt the baby.
She should contact a OB/GYN immediately to get good counseling about quitting these things. They can help her deal with the withdrawal and help focus the reasons why she is putting herself through this pain!

I think she should consider how much she cares for this child. Finding out you're pregnant is a huge thing, and requires a lot of choices you never had to think about. If she just found out, she can probably wean herself off. However, keep in mind that even at this early stage the smoke can affect the fetus. I wouldn't worry so much about the coffee as long as you're not drinking 5 mocha lattes a day. I had some soda and coffee with my daughter and son and they're both okay. I wish her the best of luck, but this is something she will have to decide in the end herself.
*I'm guessing that is Vicodin for the first one?? If she needs this for pain or whatever, consult your doctor on this*

It does not hurt the baby as much as if the baby had to go through with drawls after birth, not to mention the harm done to the baby as it is developing. Many baby's die due to the stress of birth, you will usually see the reason for death as being failure to thrive in the newspaper. Imagine the additional stress placed upon the infant if he/she has to endure with drawls. As a friend, you should counsel the mother to stop using the drugs immediately, or enter a rehab asap. It also doesn't help the mother's health a bit, not to mention, that the mother will not be in a good position to fight the addictions when dealing with the newborn baby

The withdrawal is far less damaging to the baby than continuing such addictions. Your "friend" is being extremely selfish and irresponsible if she doesn't stop immediately.

Early pregnancy is the most important time as far as development goes. If she doesn't want a deformed and retarded child, she should either quit drugs now or abort.

The baby is not addicted (yet), so it will not go through withdrawal. The longer she continues these things, the worse it will be for the baby.
