If you want a laptop that will last longer than a year, get a Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo at anywhere from 1.8 and up.

If you want a good laptop that will last:

2.0 Ghz Intel Core Duo
1 Gigabyte of Ram Atleast
80 Gigs HD Space atleast

Also with Windows Vista coming out in the next year or so you will not want to cheap it out on a video card, sure the Integreated Intel Video card is free but for another 100 bucks you could get a better video card and be able to run Vista flawlessly.

Good Luck

I would hold off if possible. The new Intel Core 2 Duo processors are just now hitting the laptops. I believe Dell has them in now. Apple should soon as well as other PC makers. They are faster than the old Core Duo's and even fast than the AMD Dual Cores plus they use less power which means less burn on the legs.

1.7GHz and up - look for the Core Duo (or dual core) processors for the best bang for the buck.

For a laptop, 1.7GHz seems to be about the norm.
