I use comet, I wet the tub down first, then I put the comet down, which is a powder, then I scrub with a brush, then i rinse it. OR... I spray it down with bleach cleaner once and a while to maintain it...

If your young and have your first place on your own it's not stupid. I clean mine like this........ Spray it down with really hot water , then , I use Scrub Free. I spray it all over and a little extra on the spots that have some build up of soap scum, or whatever it is that causes that ring in your tub. Then I wait about a half an hour and go back and wipe the tub and shower walls with a rag and spray it all out again with real hot water! The Scrub Free really does a great job, and you don't have to spend all that time scrubbing! Good luck!

What you don't want to use: Comet, or other abrasive cleaners.
Dish soap can work quite well. Wet a sponge and squirt a small amount of soap onto it. The surface doesn't need to be wet if you keep the sponge wet. You have to rinse afterwards, which sometimes isn't easy. Before I had a sprayer, I used a large plastic cup filled with water, and poured the water along the shower wall.
Bathroom cleaners that you buy at the supermarket work really well. You spray them onto the wet or dry surface, wait a few minutes, and then wipe with a damp sponge. Usually you have to rinse these off as well.
If the shower walls have a lot of build-up of old soap and minerals from the water, you might have to use a brush or a scrubbing pad to really clear it away. After that you'll be able to maintain it without much effort.

By reading some of these answers, I get the impression no one washes the tile surround.
First, get naked and in the tub. With a wet terry cloth rag and some scouring powder scrub all the tile in the tub area from bottom to top and all ledges where dust and grime could collect. If the window is in the show area, wash the sashes and glass as well. Then kneel in the tub. wash the joint between the tub and tile and all the surfaces of the tub. Shower curtain? Run through the washer on warm with a bit of bleach. With a cup or hand sprayer rinse everything well. Wash the toilet with the wash rag, rinse well with a little bleach on it and underneath the tank too. The seat, hinges and any crevices. Wash around toilet and the whole floor rinsing rag often and dampen with bleach. Half or full tiled bath? Wash down walls as well. Clean towel bars and paper holder. Wash all shelves, bottles and light fixture(s). Launder all the decorative towels and bath mat. Wipe down shower rod. Leave sink to last. Shower, get dressed, take 5 minutes breather. Windex mirror and any pictures including frames. Wash sink, faucet, dry well. Replace shower curtain, bath mat and decorative towels. Lastly fill a spray bottle with 1/3 bleach and rest water. keep in bathroom. In between scrubbings spray shower/tub with bleach solution. Rinse. It will stay cleaner longer. I spray the toilet as well. when he "loses aim."

If you have a really dirty shower tub with a lot of water stains,...etc. Get Selsum Blue Shampoo (yes shampoo and the color of it is really blue). Pour it all over the tub and shower and make a thin layer across it and let it dry. ( A couple of hours at least.) Then scrub it off, with water running and all those nasty stains will be gone. Clean after that with a shower cleaner. They make one you can hang on the shower head and turn it on after each shower. Good luck!

Not a stupid question.
If your tub is porcelain then you can use Comet or other dry, abrasive cleaners. Brilliant people already gave you the technique.
If your tub is fiberglass DO NOT use abrasive cleansers or sponges on it. That will ruin the finish and create more problems for you. Dow Scrubbing Bubbles works nicely (read directions on can), Tilex, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is excellent it even takes water spots off of shower doors (glass).
Good luck!

First, to clean the tub area get it wet and then apply Comet. It really is the only product out there that works great. After you apply it take a soft abrasive spong and move in a circular direction. Rinse, repeat if necessary. For the wall I suggest Tilex. It will clean with little or no effort and keep the soap scum and mold away.

Close the drain, add some hot water, add some Dishsoap, and bleach, use a sponge and clean, if tough spots use Scower powder. when finished, open drain, turn on shower and direct away from floor, use it to rinse. They also make many products to clean a tub- but Rinse out with the Shower spray.

I used to use just a bathroom cleaner (the spray kind) on the walls, and I scrubbed the bathtub with Comet (a powder), which also shines up the faucet nicely. You only need water to wet the surfaces and rinse them. You don't need to waste the water the whole time you are cleaning.

your best bet is bleach. get the tub wet, spray some bleach in and let it set. After about 20 minutes (make sure the room is well ventilated) go in (with gloves) and do some scrubbin. Then rinse. Your tub should be crystal clear.
Oh, and this question isn't stupid. I had to ask how to do laundry.

The Mr Clean erasers are by far the best!
Just wet the sponge; use on a dry tub and rinse. Easy!
