The first time I did that was at my Father in Laws funeral, in Wisconsin. At first I thought it was THE most disrespectful thing a person could do. One of his son's worked at a bar, and after the funeral we all went there where there was a buffet set up for us.( Another shock! ) But once I started listening to how people were actually laughing at the goofy things he had done in his life, I understood more. PLUS it took away the " clean up " for my Mother in Law to handle if everyone had gone to her house
Since then. I've been to one other funeral here at home where about 20 of us met at a restaurant/bar after the funeral, and I was completely comfortable, because the same thing happened there too. We talked about all the good things in this woman's life rather than just dwelling on the sorrow of losing her. We all had plenty of time to do that later, and we did, for quite some time.
So, no. it's NOT inappropriate, it gives you the opportunity to do as we did in both cases.
Of course,I'm talking about very close friends and family only.

I don't know about anybody else but as an Irish custom its called a 'wake' and everybody goes and has drink and food till its time to end the public preceedings and get on with the real, personal stuff which usually ends in a free-for-all,then a circle of tears and the bottle and bowl are passed along. It's a celebration for god's sake! Get into it !

It's not inappropriate at a wake is it? so why stick to convention for funerals. It's a celebration of a person's life, to pay tribute to them as long as people don't go overboard.

Definitely not, in England it is traditional to drink before the funeral and toast the deceased then go and get hammered at the wake after and fight over who gets what...

Why not? Funerals are stressful, and sometimes all you need is a drink!

what does it say-weep at a birth, for the sorrow and pain this child will face.
rejoice at this death- though sad for you, the person is now at rest, no more hurt or sorrow, have a drink, remember the good times, but no need to get falling down drunk, OH, and get arrested like Paris did, sorry my attempt at humor

In many cultures its known as a "wake" you go and celebrate the life of the person that has pased and spend time remembering them once more. It reminds us we are mortal ourselves, and one day, someone will be toasting us at a wake.

No, I think you can go drink, yeah.. Though it isn't healthy, but sometimes after somebody dies people just drown their sorrow in "drinks". But, nothing seems wrong with it at all, yeah. So, don't worry. And my sincerest apologies if somebody you know died.
