I am teaching myself how to play guitar?

Question

I am using tabs, am I less of a person for not reading music?
I have only had the guitar for 3 days. I taught myself to read tabs & can play most of a song. But should I learn the music???

That all depends, you dont have to learn to read music to play. That is a personal decision you gotta make. I have been playing for quite some years and do not know how to read music. The funny thing (and the good thing) is that I always have the option too.

I would focus on learning the neck. Learn your scales, and chords... then start learning more songs. Most important though... HAVE FUN!!!


as far as everyone saying you should learn music, thats false.... hendrix couldnt read music... think about it ;)

For now I would say just learn your Chords and Scales from there just learn the song you want to play. Playing the guitar is about having fun with it. So play what you want to.

Less of a person? Wow, that's pretty severe. Music is supposed to be fun.
Learn to play however you want. If at some point you decide that you want to get serious, then do it.
Don't let anyone tell you that you're less of a person for ANY reason.

It's better if u learn it, but it's totally up to you. I've been playing tabs for a year and I'm doing fine.
