I am reading The Sun Also Rises and Hemmingway writes that a woman's life work "lay in the pelouse, but she kept an eye on the people of the pesage." What is pelouse and what is pesage?

Basically he was saying that that a woman's life work is to lay in the field (lawn), but she keeps an eye on people and weigh's them in... checks them out... its French and unfortuantly it's not a straight translation
