It means that any combination of Yankee wins and Red Sox losses totaling 15 will mathematically eliminate the Sox from winning the division.

They also call it a "magic number" when referring to it from the other side - in this case, they'd call it the Yankees' magic number to clinch.

Any combination of wins by first place team and losses by said team, and said team is elimanated from winning said division.

A very good example is the white sox.

Any combination of Tiger wins and/or white losses equaling 19, and the white sox will be mathimatically elimanated from clinching the central division title.

Please note that tampa bay, KC, and washington have all been elimanated.
