When we looked at the house it was 100 degrees outside but the inside was just a bit warmer than I'm comfortable with. We've had the house for 1 week. Now that it's 80 degrees outside I can't get our AC to a comfortable level. There's two units, one for the new kitchen addition and one for the rest of the house. There's a ten degree (or more) difference from the living room (where the thermostat is) to the uppermost bedroom (above the living room). The house is sealed pretty well... interior air pressure keeps the doors from closing easily (they have to be pushed somewhat to close fully), so I don't think there are any air leaks.

close the vents downstairs or in the basement as cold air goes to the basement and the hotter air will rise. You will need to crack a window upstairs for a few days to release the hot air or turn a bathroom ceiling vent on for a few days. The house will not cool effectively if it is "sealed" the hot air needs to escape. It sounds like your cold air return vents in the walls upstairs may be plugged or blocked by furniture or something else.

First, be sure the air filter is clean. Replace if necessary.

Check the vents, be sure they are clear and fully open.

The upstairs may be a bit warmer than downstairs. Hot air rises.
It still should be comfortable if the AC is functioning properly.

As it is newly purchased, call the Realtor and have the original company who performed the inspection before purchase, look at it. If he overlooked something, there may be a warranty involved on their part, or from the Realtor.

It may be low coolant, but the inspector should have found that.

Could be a host of problems. It may be that the units are too weak to effectively cool, but I doubt that's the case if you have two separate ones.

It may also be the refrigerant levels. If it is too low it can cause this problem. However, if there is too much refrigerant it can prevent the ac from properly cooling as well.

Also, when the ac unit comes on, does the compressor come on? It could be faulty as well.

If it's a new house, find out who the subcontractor was that put the ac unit in and have them inspect it. A new house should have warranty service to cover this.

Get one of those "portable" units and put it upstairs in the hottest room. Buy it 130% of the needed size. Exhaust the hot air out through the fireplace vent, or a window.
Home Depot has economical units.

you should have brought an condo, or an apartment, low maintenance, Ac, pool, and tub, the only thing your not complaining about is the lawn maintenance. You should have had an inspector come to check it all out, before you paid for it, and you should have made the previous owners pay for the inspection before closing, and made them make any and all repairs, as an insentive to closing.

are you sure that you have enough air returns upstairs one way you can tell is .does the air feel layered [cool at your feet and warm at eye level].if so .i suggest ceiling fans with dampers installed in the bottom floor ducts .because.some times it more economical to do this way then to install new returns to the up stairs
