how can human beings make any sense at all of the world that they live in? Why does the universe have enough order for us to discern an underlying lawfulness, and yet enough chaos to permit such things as nature openness and human free will?

If you start looking at reality the other way around you might find some answers. First of all, human free will does not come from chaos! We are all one, a big consciousness, and we create reality. Everything we see is a part of us, an extension of us, our hopes, dreams, thoughts, feelings, etc. It is all connected. Now, maybe you will be on your way to understanding life, the universe and everything. We are not products of our reality, our reality is a product of us.

They don't make sense of the world, they just come up with a crock and say it enough times until people believe them. The whole thing is absurd. We don't discern lawfulness, we impose it on the chaos, for otherwise we'd go mad. The universe is just trillions of things going this way and that. As for free will, how did you ever get there from what you said before? Free will is just chaos with a little rationalization thrown in.
