Final Fantasy 7/8.

The gameplay was fun. The storyline was amazing with both comedy, drama, and serious situations. Each character was well made which made the game as awhole more fulfilling to play than any button masher figthing game or repetitive racing game. The battle system was well though out with great graphics and hundreds of possibilitys for combos and moves to discover and the sidequests where both funny and exctiting. Plus Sephiroth is the must awesome villain of all time.

... all those mould-breaking originals. Arcades now seem to be full of nothing but simulators, or games with flashy graphics.

I was just coming of age around 1980/81 and was drawn to the arcades like gravy to a roast beef dinner.

My Mother always thought video games were evil, and I think this only made them more appealing, with their flashing lights, loud electronic sounds and explosion noises. If I was lucky, my Father would suggest getting fish and chips some Friday nights, and me and my brother would rush upstairs and get one pound's worth of ten pence pieces each (which seemed like a fortune then) and with my Mother's words "Wasting your money! You might as well just give it to the man!" ringing in our ears, we would climb in the car and go with him. Soon we would be standing in 'Georges Fish Bar' waiting to play such gems as 'Phoenix', 'Crush Roller', 'Galaga', and 'Dig Dug' while my Dad queued up for our fish supper dinner. George, who ran the shop, used to end up putting our stuff in one of the pie warmers whilst my poor Dad would wait until the two quid we had between us would run out on 'Asteroids Deluxe', 'Amidar' or 'Ladybug'.

One friday night back then, I counted 8 people waiting to play 'Crush Roller'. When was the last time you saw a queue like that for a video game?

Sometimes on a Sunday in the Summer, Mum and Dad would take us down to Southend for the day, or Walton-on-the-Naze for a weeks' holiday, where I would be allowed to go into the arcades for a while and play 'Pole Position' on the pier, or games like 'Battlezone', 'Moon Patrol', 'Lunar Rescue' , 'Berzerk', 'ASO' (with it's bowing face on the "thank you for playing" screen), 'Exerion', 'Galaxian', 'Rally X' or 'Gorf' along the seafront before we went home.

I think all in all, I'd be hard pressed to pick a better classic than "Asteroids"... No need to understand complex rules and instructions, and anyone can play it... from a 5 year old to my 72 year old Father! ;-)

Final Fantasy. All of them, they will keep you busy for ages and there is so ,uch thought put into them! I love them but I haven't managed to finish Crystal Chronicles, I'm at the very end and I am struggling, but they are the best games ever. You need to really think about it.
Although I recently payed Lara Croft and enjoyed it, It should have been given brilliant reviews although I didn't like the ending.

Guild Wars

I love online gaming, but all of them leave me feeling terrible about myself when I play them because they suck up more time than necessary. Guild Wars, however, has all the fun of online gaming, but is easier to get out of.. saving me from the guilt of wasting my life in front of a computer.

Whatever was just released at the time. Right now I can't choose between X3: Reunion and TES4 Oblivion, both are quite new, have astounding graphics and RPG elements.

Streetfighter 2

It was just for some reason ahead of its time. The graphics were colourful and refreshing, the music was great and doing special moves required a special technique which we spent our childhoods mastering, it's with me to this day, i could whoop a s s still. and i rarely play it. Oh man you got me going now, i got it on ps2 as 15th anniversay edition, wanna play it now.

Well you didn't say ever, so atm, probably Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Looks gorgeous, so open, so many things to do, so much stuff to be collected, brave and innovative make of an open RPG, with clever quests.
