I was recently diagnosed with gastrointestinitis and I was never told what it was

gastro refers to the stomach. Intestine is intestines. the itis part means an inflammation.

and gastro refers to the gastrointestinal system. Gastro usually has something to do with the oesophagus, stomach, large and small intestine and colons.

Gastroenteritis covers a lot of ground. There are many many conditions ranging from severe to mild. I have Crohns disease which is a gastroenteritis condition. SO is IBS, Colitis and a whole range of other conditions. Ask your Doctor what your exact condition is and for a treatment plan.
