I gather you are a foreigner? Now do you mean North America or South America, and if North America do you mean Canada or the USA? There is a vast difference amongst all three.
Yes that word FREE seems to appeal to everyone...but nothing is free, us taxpayers pay for it ALL. If you wanna come here you work and enjoy the benefits of work which earn you the "free" things, such as education. It's only free because WE THE PEOPLE pay for it. No slackers needed thank you.
As you can see even some AMERICANS think everything is free. That's the problem with FREE education and FREE support.

America set the pace for democracy everywhere. But most importantly, it showed how abundance and a strong economy is directly proportionate to healthy living conditions and effective contraceptive methods.
Healthier and healthier living conditions has been an ongoing theme in the construction of America.
As has the maintance of family size to the lowest it can possibly be.
I really hope that you watch the video that I'm linking you to. It shows how the current developing countries are moving in the world. It's a wonderful lecture from a very vivid and passionate, articulate professor.
All you need to watch is the first 10 minutes and you'll be hooked.
Enjoy!
[notice in the video how America is always at the positive end of everything...clearly a signature of Americanism at its best, and the clue to what America brought to the world]
"America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've gotta' want it bad. Cause' it's gonna' put up a fight. It's going to say, "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who is standing center-stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land is the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.""

America is not intelligent.
Things cannot be intelligent.
Only people.
Americans have built a free and prosperous nation by indivuals and groups doing many smart things:
1. devolping and accepting a brilliant constitution
2. protecting property rights and due process rights for everyone
3. supporting a free market economy that has yielded previously unknown prosperity
free public schools? they might have had their place but as currently in place, NOT intelligent
national parks? nifty idea, clever and nice, but not intelligent or important
minimum wage, social security, OSHA, EPA, the federal Department of Education, not smart at all

Free public schools and national parks are LIBERAL. We need to end free education and cut taxes for billionaires. We need to sell the national parks to Communist China. People don't like liberalism any more, they want to go back to the 1890's, thats what the elections of 2000 and 2004 were all about--that and giving companies tax breaks for sending jobs overseas.

The exultation of the self-help guu is a purely American phenomenon that is an 'intelligent' thing because the practice produces billionaires (Anthony Robbins, Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Phil, Deepak Chopra, Marrianne Williamson....)
America's intelligence lies in its ability to swindle dumb people.
