There was an over-turned beetle on my kitchen floor. He was there the whole time we were having breakfast, then when I picked it up to toss it in the trash he woke up and started running.

I think he accidentally got turned over and after a while stoped struggling, and when you turned him over he just got back to doing what he does. I don't think insects sleep at all.

When I've placed insects into hibernation, they just "fell asleep" in random positions. They can sleep in any position that they choose, but because of their shape, most don't "sleep" on their backs.

No. Insect's don't like to be on there backside anytime. They sleep on all fours.
