I had to work on the streets for two months to get the money for my first car. My parents didn't have any money. It still pisses me off to see young children driving around in cars better then mine because their rich mommy and daddy bought it for them.

I bought my first car after I had my first job. I had to carpool and beg rides for almost a year until I saved enough money for a down payment. At the time I was disappointed that my parents didn't help me at least figure out what to do. However, I learned to depend on me, not someone else for the things I want/need in life. I ended up buying my dream car - a 1968 yellow MGB convertible with leather seats.

By contrast, I gave my daughter my Tercel. When that died, I gave her my celica convertible. She needed something larger so I cosigned on a RAV4. My husband and I ended up paying for it. She's an artist and very short on bucks. Nonetheless, she's never had to get out of real financial jam on her own.

I think it's a good idea to buy your own first car with advice from your parents.

I bought my first car, I also had to pay for all my driving lessons myself to. My parents are still alive, my dad just refused. He didn't see it as a justify able expense and my mother having to pick me up from places meant they always knew who i was with and where.

My parents offered, but I chose to go it alone. The feeling of independence was well worth the $135 a month it cost me.

I bought my first car but my dad co-signed the loan. I liked that 1974 white and orange Maverick Grabber.

My parents co-signed for me after I worked two jobs and saved half of the money up first. I'm glad they did. It was not an impossible burden for me and helped to establish my credit right away.

My dad gave me his truck, and then when it died he bought me a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am. When it finally died my junior year of college, I used my brother's old truck. Then when I graduated, he gave me $5,000 to put down on any car I wanted. I chose a Mazda Protege which my wife promptly took for herself, and I drove her Grand Prix. Then in 2002 my wife bought me a Dodge Ram for my birthday that I still have today.

Whew.
