Can a person with one kidney become an alcoholic? I think that they can. I mean what would stop them. I could see if they had a partial liver or something like that, but anyway I ask this question because there is a woman that I work with and they think her grandchild may be born with one kidney and her way to comfort her pregnant daughter was to say, "At least you know he will never be an alcoholic." She also told her daughter that this child will never be able to run and play sports. Is she misinformed?

You don't have to comment on the fact that this lady is crazy for "comforting" her daughter in this manner, we all know that.

Thanks for the answers. Everyone is just pretty much confirming what I thought. But does anyone have an medical explanation of why this could still happen so I can shut her up. I am so sick of hearing her say that everytime a client calls.

Becoming an alcoholic has nothing to do with the kidneys. In addition, having 1 kidney does not prevent you from running or playing sports. Heck, Alonzo Mourning played professional basketball after receiving a kidney from a relative!

My son-in-law was born with one kidney and it has not stopped him from living a normal life. He does not drink but that is by choice, not because of one kidney. The only time he has had trouble was when he got a kidney stone and it lodged in the tube and he had to have a bypass stint put in temporarily. Very painful. He has also fathered 3 perfect grandchildren. The only limits I can see is probably in the contact sports area, like football, etc.

Kidneys have nothing to do with alcoholism. One functioning kidney in and of itself has no effect on someones ability to run or play sports (though they may choose to not play rough contact sports, for fear of injury).

Having one kidney won't stop anyone from becoming an alcoholic. It also won't stop them from running. They may be discouraged from playing certain contact sports, but there are plenty they can safely enjoy.

The child will definitely be able to do sports and also to do anything it wants but some commonsense will also be a good thing .
