You may as well say "What if the wheel wasn't invented?" If there wasn't the "Gun" there may be the rocket propelled arrows, spring loaded knives, etc.
The gun is a tool. It can be used to kill. It can be used to defend.
No history wouldn't be different. The tools would be different.

Normally I don't answer if questions, however I am passionately against Guns and think the better question is What would the world be like if all guns were destroyed! In response to your question is it in our nature, I must say no. Self destruction is part of this dualistic world we live in, Bad must balance Good. The more Good we create, the more Bad it takes to balance it. I am not here to judge the world, only to observe it. It is obvious that if the gun was not invented, history would be different. For every bad thing that happens something good comes from it. Is that your point?

The world has more history before the invention of the gun than after. Since the time that Cain killed Abel, man has had it in his heart to do evil to his fellow man. If not the gun, it would have been the knife, or the bow, or the axe. Face it death by gunshot is quicker and less painful than most of the other means of killing. Maybe the gun was really a blessing in disguise.

The big difference in America would have been control of the land. Without the gun, the white man would probably have failed to drive native Americans onto reservations. The conflict would have still existed, but the warfare may have had different outcomes.

Well ---- first off ---- you know that guns don't kill - people do. . .
That's a cliche that I totally despise and disagree with -
I wish that guns were never invented, but - that's my perfect world ideal. There are so many other weapons that do the same - just takes more effort or time.
Without guns, perhaps the animal kingdom would keep human population numbers in check?

It is our nature to self destruct. We've been around now for thousands of years and have continuously masaqured, tortured, maimed and generally f**ked each other up for all of that time - can you name one other species of being on this planet that has done that? If we hadn't invented the gun it would have been some other weapon.

The Mongols, Largest empire ever in the history of man, and they sure as hell didnt ask for it or have friendly negotiations with they're border nations. If someone wanted something back then they just f^cking took it and if someone took something from you, you didnt call the cops and take them to court, you took it back like a man. short little history lesson for ya ;D

We would have air launched heat seeking javelins, Armed guards would have pointy sticks and longbows, and the army would drive tanks with stone launchers, and deploy anti-personnel punji stake traps. We would still find ways to kill each other. It's the human way.

Human nature is self-destructive. For all the stags, hares and people saved, there would be a whole lot morekilled by arrows, poison, disease, poverty and selfishness.
Oh what a happy boy I am!
