On a theoretical basis it is sound so long as it exists within the framework of the circular flow, there is some basic level of consumption (thus of expenditure), and there is a money supply.

It is also helpful to have a fractional banking system and Keynesian equilibrium conditions.

Why would you want to examine it theoretically? I have studied it based on demographic and socioeconomic factors. I have also studied it based on the psychographics pertaining to geographical and educational factors.
