i watched a documentary on bears the other day,a bear cub will stay with it's mother until it is around two years old in that time mother bear teaches it's young all it needs to know on being an independant bear,the older it gets the less it nurses,the mother will either wean it completely and drive it away to be on it's own at two years or if she is getting ready to have another litter of cubs she drives the older cub away to get ready for new ones,i also found out that usually even though a mother bear has more than one cub it is very common that only one will make it to adulthood
