For innovation: Hendrix, Beck, Van Halen, Blackmore, Berry;
For agrssion: Hetfield, Ramone, Asheton, Thunders, Jones;
For everyday listening: Howe, May, and Santana again.

"The best" anything is only an opinion of course. There is no scientific way to evaluate "the best" so what you will find here is a list of people's favorite guitarists. From what I've read so far this list is pretty standard.
