When I go on road trips, there are a few things that seem to crop up again and again in every cd collection I pull together. Except where noted, these are album names, not songs.
Mellow music:
Older Bob Dylan, like "The Times They Are A' Changin'," "Freewheelin," "Bringin' It All Back Home," or "John Wesley Harding"
Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance, anything
King Tubby's "Dub From the Roots"
Dr. Alimantado's "Best Dressed Chicken In Town"
Velvet Underground, "VU & Nico" and their 1969 eponymous album
Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys, "Bon Reve"
Keep Me Awake:
Big Star, "#1 Record" and "Radio City" (even Paul Westerberg once said he never travels far without a little Big Star)
The Monkees, "More of The Monkees" -- great to sing along to
Chuck Berry, especially the track "No Particular Place to Go"
Bo Diddley
New York Dolls
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros, I love the tracks "Johnny Appleseed," "Bhindi Bhagee," and "Coma Girl"
New Orleans r&b is a staple:
"Finger Poppin' & Stompin' Feet: 20 Classic Allen Toussaint Productions For Minit Records 1960-1962" is a great collection of hits.
Good zydeco is a must -- the best feel-good music out there:
Boozoo Chavis, "Boozoo That's Who" or "Live at the Habibi Temple"
Beau Jocque, "Git It, Beau Jocque!"
Best driving blues:
R.L. Burnside
Muddy Waters
Fred McDowell, "I Do Not Play No Rock n' Roll"
Lazy Lester, "I'm A Lover Not a Fighter"

I am a CD burner kind of person...I can't settle for one artist so I mix it up a lot. I have slow song Cd's, dance music, country, pop, rock, etc...I even mix all of the above. A few good songs I am currently stuck on are:
Gnarles Barkley-Crazy
Fergie-London Bridge (Oh snap version)
Rascal Flatts-any
Nickleback-Far Away
Celion Dion-I drove all night
Sugarland-any
3 Doors Down-Landing in London
Carrie Underwood-Before He Cheats
The Verionicas-Speechless
Panic at the Disco- I write sins not tragedies
I could go on for ever but there is a general idea! Good luck to you and be safe!

Try audiobooks, too. They make the time pass alot faster. Cracker Barrel restaurants have a great system-you buy the audiobook at regular price (CD or tape), then return it to any Cracker Barrel. I think they charge about $2.50 a week. Most of the audiobooks I've listened to last around 6-8 hours, so I've returned them the same day somewhere down the interstate and paid nothing at all-I either exchanged it, or at the end of the trip got my money back.

noone can answer that question for you. You should have your own music style and taste. I personally dont like country music, so if i asked that question, i would get a ton of country style music answers I would ignore.
You will get answer that you dont like. Get some cd's that you like that way you dont have to fuss around with the radio stations blurring in and out.
Good luck have fun.
