obviously, I will have to go way back to relearn algebra basics. When I haven't had the need to apply them in 35years..........

Hello there,

-(x+2)-2x=-2(x+1)
-x-2-2x = -2x - 2
-x-2-2x+2x+2 = 0
(Negative & positive gets cancelled)
-x = 0
x = 0

NB: More often than not, the negative sign is mistaken to be indicative of subtraction, when it actually is multiplication by a negative number/variable.

Hence, If your question actually is: -
-(x+2)(-2x)=(-2)(x+1)
+2x^2 + 4x = -2x - 2
2x^2 + 6x +2 = 0
x^2 + 3x + 1 = 0or x^2 - 3x = -1

Sorry, if it adds to the confusion.

previous person made a mistake in the calculation :)

-(x+2)-2x=-2(x+1)
-x - 2 -2x = -2x -2 // +2x to both sides of the equation lead to
-x -2 -2x +2x = -2x -2 +2x
-x -2x +2x -2 = -2x + 2x -2
-x +0 -2 = 0 + (-2)
-x -2 = -2 // multiplying both sides by (-1)
-1 * ( - x - 2) = (-1) * (-2)
+x + 2 = 2 // substracting 2 (or actually adding (-2) to both sides)

x +2 - 2 = 2 -2
x = 0

You can make a check by substituting x= 0 to the equation

-(0+2)-2*0 = -2(0+1)
-2 + 0 = -2 (1)
-2 really equals to -2,

so x = 0

Guys, just for your information ... We in Central Europe (Slovakia) solve these kind of equations in the 3rd grade of ELEMENTARY school... Shame on you that you deal with these simple stuff also at University

-(x+2)-2x=-2(x+1)

first multiply the negative numbers into the brackets to remove it:

- x - 2 - 2x = -2x - 2

next sum up all the x on the left side:

- 3x - 2 = - 2x - 2

bring the -3x from the left to the right side. as a result, -3x will become +3x.

- 2 = 3x - 2x - 2

bring the - 2 from the right side to the left side. as a result, this will become +2:

- 2 + 2 = x
hence, 0 = x

therefore x = 0. to check if its right, substitute all the x in the question to see if the equation still stands.

both the first two answers have mistakes in them. see if you can spot them and hopefully this will help you re-understand algebra.

hope this helped.

- (x + 2) - 2x = 2 ( x + 1)

- x - 2 - 2x = 2x + 2

removing the parenthesis on the left side and the distributive property on the right side of the equation.

-2 -3x = 2x + 2

- 2 -3x - 2x = 2x + 2 - 2x

Subtracting both sides of the equation by - 2x

- 2 - 5x = 2

- 2 - 5x + 2 = 2 + 2

Adding both sides of the equation by + 2

- 5x = 4

- 5x/-5 = 4/-5

Dividing both sides of the equation by - 5

x = - 4/5

The solution set is {-4/5}

The answer is x = - 4/5

-(x + 2)-2x = -2(x + 1)
**do the parenthesis first**
-x - 2 - 2x = -2x - 2
**transpose / switch and change the sign of the variable**
-x -2x + 2x = -2 + 2
**add or subtract**
-x = 0
**not allowed to make -x or -y, etc...**
x = 0
**in the equation, replace your answer with the ones that have x in it**

-(0+2) -2(0) = -2 (0 + 1)
-2 = -2

**CORRECT ANSWER is x = 0 **

No. The equation is not correct.
Let us see:
-(x+2)-2x=-x-2-2x=-2(x+1)-x

and not only -2(x+1) as you stated above
in the problem

Kish is totally rite.....

-(x+2) -2x = -2(x+1)

1. -x-2-2x = -2x-2
2. -3x-2 = -2x-2 <------- bring the -2x from right to left then...
3. -x-2 = -2 <-------- bring the negative 2 from left to right so...
4. -x = 0 <---- multiply negative 1 by each side.
5. x= 0 (you know zero is still zero even if you multiply any number)

so the answer is...... x = 0

first you start by putting the - in the left of the equation into the brackets and do the same with the -2x in the right

-x-2-2x=-2x-2
then you put together like terms on the same side of the = sign
-3x-2=-2x-2
then add 3x to both sides to get
-2=x-2
now add 2 to both sides
0=x
there is your answer

-(x+2)-2x=-2(x+1)
Divide out the negative sign:
-x-2-2x=-2x-2

Add like terms on each side of the equal sign:
-3x-2=2x-2

Add the 3x to both sides:
-2=x-2

Add 2 to both sides:
0=x

Check the answer:
-(0+2)-2(0)=-2(0+1)
0-2-0=0-2
-2=-2

kish is right. x=0.

this is a simple linear equation.

-(x+2)-2x=-2(x+1)

distribute the negative sign and -2.

-x-2-2x=-2x-2
-3x-2=-2x-2
0=x

try substituting if you don't believe.

-(0+2)-2*0=-2(0+1)
-2-0=-0-2
-2=-2.
