The playoffs are a 25 man roster. Most teams cut it down to 10 pitchers and 15 position players. The reason for that is because you drop a bullpen guy and send one starter to the bullpen because you only need 4 starters in the playoffs and not 5.

Normally a playoff roster is set using the 25 players on the roster on August 31 of any year. On September 1, teams are allowed to recall players that are on the current 40 player roster. Usually a team only brings up the players that would be useful in the playoff chase; sometimes a player is recalled to evaluate their abilities in the major leagues.

There are times when a player is not on the active roster on August 31, is on the full 40-player roster, and still competes in the playoffs and World Series. A good example is Francisco Rodriguez of the 2002 Anaheim Angels. Because of an injury, he was recalled to the active major league roster after August 31 but was still available for the playoffs. The Angels would not have won the World Series without him playing.

Regular season, 25 men occupy the roster (that is the maximum)...on Sept. 1st, anyone on the 40 man roster can be called up as the rosters expand for the final month to 40 players.

Beginning with the first playoff game, the roster is set at 25 again...if a player gets hurt, a team can replace him AFTER the current series is over...but not before.

Back to 25, although a 40-player expanded roster is allowed from Sept. 1st until the end of the regular season.

The rosters expand around this time...then get cut down to the playoff roster......thats why you see so many AAAers in the big leagues late in the season, then ya dont see them in the playoffs.

The active roster can only have 40 men. If they need more, they have to take some off (send them to AAA) to get the ones they need. It stays the same.
