By the time you get to college, you should have some sense of the area in which you might look. For example, you may know that you liked the science classes you took but hated history, or vice versa. You can then experiment by taking a few basic classes in areas which sound appealing to you until you settle on one which works.

Know that most college students really aren't sure about what the perfect course for them is. Many change majors or fields several times, and of those who don't, I would say that the majority stayed the course because they didn't know what to change to rather than because they had found the perfect field for them.

I also tell students that it is likely that the perfect career for them may not have been invented yet, so it is hard to anticipate how to prepare for it. You need good, basic skills and a lot of alertness to the world around you to be aware of and prepared for fields which may be appealing to you.

I'm not crazy about the aptitude tests. When I took both aptitude and achievement tests, they told me that I was good at things which didn't interest me, and no good at the things I found appealing. It took a long time and a lot of luck to fall into a career I really enjoy.

Well if you are afreshman just going into college, I would suggest taking GER (General Education Requirements) first. That way you won't be taking courses that you don't need and can't use for the major you eventually decide to take up. Think about what you are interrested in. Do you like Art? Are you good with Kids? Are you always trying to help others??? Those kinds of questions are good to ask yourself and then I would suggest talking to the advisor that most freshman are required to meet with anyway. They should be able to direct you in finding a major. I definately don't suggest picking one right away, because people change and you will be wasting your time taking courses in a specific major, that may not transfer to another major.

Good Luck
