McCarthy was on a modern-day witch hunt and Miller needed a way to express his outrage at the impropriety of the hearings (and their ultimate illegalities and trouncing of civil liberties) without further enraging the members of the Committee. They were destroying the careers of good men and women in Hollywood on simple innuendo. He was greatly influential in exposing McCarthy's outrageous behavior and gave McCarthy's ultimate foe, Edward R. Murro, the courage to go public in exposing the lies and inconsistencies in McCarthy's statements.
