European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will
make the sivil servants jump with joy.
The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up
konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag
is disgrasful and it should go away.
By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl.
Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu
understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.
Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

Going on holiday is supposed to be about seeing a new place and experiencing it and the culture of the people (which includes the language), its supposed to be different from home - otherwise why would we even travel??
Nobody has the right to deny anyone else the right to their own culture, customs and traditions and language is one of the most important aspects of a nations culture!
If you want to find it easier to travel abroad then stay to the big cities and tourist resorts where quite an amount of people speak english now anyway, other than that why not learn a little of the language before you head away to make it a bit easier for yourself?

First, no language is daft. If you cannot speak other languages, and dont care about other's sentiments, you are daft. A universal language is indeed essential so that we may all be able to freely communicate with one another anywhere in the world. However, each person's tongue is important to him/her as is the literature associated with it. There is some sense in your question - I just wish you'd put it with some sensitivity.

Be worried... the US version of English is permeating throughout the world. So, so scary.
Nevertheless, the latin base languages such as French and Italian, are lovely to the ear and I wouldn't like to see them disappear, similarly Welsh and Gaelic. The Arabic languages have great depths of meaning, giving poetry deeper dimensions than can be had with other languages, with the result such literary art cannot be translated as well into other languages.
Languages should be preserved because they are rich and diverse, opening up new explorations for us.

Absolutely not! Language is the seat of culture, identity and often self-worth. It is an indicator of social position, religious commitment and intellectual achievement.
English is a mongrel tongue composed of words from several different languages. It is only dominant in the current climate due to the old empire and the internet. In fact, mandarin is spoken by far more people.
I would be happy to fight for the survival of dying languages, not participate in their downfall.

Most definitely...after all, airline pilots have to speak English, why not all public transport drivers and shop owners etc? It would be great for tourism and we could get rid of foreign language lessons off school curriculums and teach the kids summat more useful, like brick laying or fly fishing!

Why don't you just stay home and speak English to yourself?
You would do the tourism industry a lot of good and make the lives of the employees a lot easier.
Geesh! What a selfish idea!

We have been trying to do so with immigrants to Australia for years, but the authorities are not pushing it along enough. The migrants want us Aussies to convert to their languages, I think. Not likely.... PS, I think that some of the English language speakers on this site should learn to spell it as well! Hab a goud olliddae.Cheers.

If I had to repeat the first part of your statement: "Isnt it about tim we did away with all these daft foreign languages", English would be one of these "foreign" languages. Dont be an egoist...grow up!
