The Olympics started in Greece. It was named after a mountain in Greece called Mount Olympus. The Greek people believed that the Gods lived at the top of Mount Olympus. They would light the torch in honor of Zeus the biggest God.The first games were held from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D. as a religious festival. They would call the Olympics Olympus, and have them to see who would be most God-like for Mount Olympus. They also believed that competitive sports would please the spirits of the dead.

In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.
