How would you conclude that one friend is of good character as opposed to another friend?And what determines the quality of the character?

If he/she keeps my secrets,listens to my problems and helps me,doesn't jealous,has common interests and finds time for me..
I think these are most important..

a friend's character is shown by his behaviour towards u and everyone else.trust determines the quality of the character.
