To get the gas flowing into the carburettor. Older cars didn't have fuel injection like new cars.

Unfortunately older cars have this thing called a carberator(sp?).. You have to pump the gas pedal to get a bit of gas up to it to make the car run,, Unlike fuel injection, which does it automatically...

Two reasons,

It closed the choke plate, and it gave a squirt of gas into the intake manifold so it could start the engine.

Because they are carberated and don't maintain a fuel pressure...
