Gargle with warm salt water, a few times a day. It will help to draw out the infection and relieve minor pain. Anytime I feel a sore throat coming on I do this a few times a day and it goes away. Also drink herbal, or lemon tea with honey in it.
You can also do over the counter if it gets real bad. Chloaspetic Spray tastes bad but works instantly.
Hope you feel better soon!

All the answers so far are good and worth trying, most of them works, but I have a suggestion.
In case of a Serious sore throat, people tend to work their throat, this irritates the throat further.
There are many over the counter medicines that have antistatic effect they numb the area that are effected, hence relieving the discomfort and the pain, this allows you to rest your throat. They come in liquids, sprays, and lozenges form. Most local pharmacy have them.
PS
If the sore throat persistent then see a doctor, have him test for, strap infection. This is the test most Doctor can perform in the office with a microscope reading of throat culture. Strap infection if left alone can get to the heart and damage the valves in the heart. Doctor must treat it with antibiotics.

If the sore throat is caused by a sinus drip try taking an antihistamine first and then gargle with warm salt water. The salt water should have very little salt in it....you should barely be able to taste the salt. Do the salt gargle about 4 times a day. Hope you feel better

My daughter had a sore throat last night and I told her to do this:
Take some warm salt water mixed with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide, Gargle a few times.
It worked for her.
If you have a lot of phlegm in your throat, a shot of whiskey (Or vodka) will take care of it. I wouldn't recommend it for small children.
An old family rememdy is whiskey, honey and lemon mixed together. that works as well.

A spoonful of honey will help soothe the throat. Toast is actually good for the throat if sore too, I know it sounds strange but true. When I had my tonsils removed it was toast I had to eat to help the healing, and prevention of ulcers etc, as the roughage helps remove them-quicker recovery.
A spoonful of pure honey a day will help to keep the immune system strong too-it helps to speed up healing too

Gargle with warm salt water twice a day from a nursing stand point. I also take the Vitamin C candy that you can buy over the counter in the pharmacy as a precaution. If it continues though I would definitely see a doctor.
