Cause you don't know if it's really funny or not. I find that if you tell a joke with a perfectly straight face, it is more funny for everyone cause they might not have been expecting something funny.And, the longer you have to keep a straight face, the harder YOU will laugh when you finally can, and laughs are contagious. And, if you laugh at it youself while telling it, your audience might expect it to be funnier than it really is or they might not even understand it in the first place. I've experienced both sides.

That's not true, I laugh at my own jokes once in a while! Then I start laughing more because I imagine what the people around me must be thinking as they see me laughing by myself.

it looses its meaning the person telling the joke becomes annoying like that when they continuous laugh at the same joke over and over
