My daughter is a vegetarian. I love vegetables but I also need to have a balanced diet including meat. I eat mostly chicken and fish, very seldom have any red meat. And a lot of veggies.

Humans are omnivores. Some people make the choice to eat vegetarian, although it's difficult to do this and stay healthy. You have to know how to achieve the proper balance of vitamins. There are certain proteins that are only easily available by eating meat.
It's also difficult to eat only meat and stay healthy. A balanced diet with a combination of foods is best.

This question is one that is very much nearly a religious choice in many ways. It is a very subjective choice and can depend on whether you are making a gut/emotional choice or a health choice or a scientifically-based choice. Meat is *not* unhealthy in and of itself. It is unhealthy in excess, when raised in unhealthy surroundings, or when not consumed in balance. If you approach this from a biological/evolutionary viewpoint, then you must accept that humans are made to be omnivorous. We have the anatomy and physiology to consume meat. We have specific teeth to consume it and enzymes to digest it. However, we also have other teeth to eat veggies and the enzymes to digest them. We have consumed both since our arrival in the biosystem. Now *emotionally* or *morally* it is important to recognize that most of the meat that we buy at the grocery store has been raised unnaturally and in many ways, inhumanely. Most cattle and poultry that we eat has been fed an unnatural diet, pumped full of the medications necessary to prevent disease secondary to the tight quarters they are housed under, and often cruelly subjected to behavior modification and physical modifications in order to prevent natural behaviors such as establishment of hierarchy, infighting, etc. So the choice for many is whether or not to nourish themselves at the cost of the lives of other creatures with whom we share the earth. On that level it becomes quite the philosophical, and often, a religious question. Are we equal to animals? do they have souls? is meat murder? Finally, is meat healthy? Like so many things which are said to be unhealthy, even meat must be put into perspective. Eaten in moderation, balanced by other food groups, in conjunction with regular exercise; raised in a healthy, uncrowded surrounding, fed on a natural diet low in artificial supplements and medications; butchered under humane circumstances, packed and brought to your kitchen in an expedient fashion; with all this in place meat would not be *un*healthy.
So there you have it. It's really a quite simply choice. *giggle*
my answer is based on 20 years raised on meat, 15 years as a vegetarian through 3 healthy pregnancies, and now the last 10 years again with meat in my diet, a great deal of soul searching over those 40 odd years, an education in biology and medicine, and a spiritual milieu grounded in both Christian and earth-based teachings.
