Dracula means son of the dragon. It was originally a title coming from the Order of the Knights of the Dragon, a royal fraternity dedicated to defending Christendom against the Turks.
Dracula has a double-meaning in Romanian which is son of the devil. Bram stoker came across that and decided to use that name for his vampire villian.
The real Dracula was Vlad Tepes a Prince of Wallachia in the mid-15th century.
To learn more about the Prince Dracula and Count Dracula check out an article I wrote two years ago about that subject:

There is a castle in Romania that they will take you to and say that dracula lived there. In fact he did not, he was a real guy and just got a bad rep and was killed by the people in his village as was thought to be a vampire his real house of residence was burnt down and there isnt much to see but is only a mile or so away from the castle that is now the tourist attraction.

Yes he was a real man with a gory and horrific past. Know as Vlad the Impaler he was the real life bases of Bram Stokers novel Dracula. He lived in Transylvania were he was a Prince. Check out his story (link below). It's a good read one of the first Vampire recored in history (by this I mean he was known to drink blood but he was not a supernatural vampire.)

Vlad Sepish (not sure of spelling) was Vlad Dracul or Vlad the impaler, has 2 castles in the area of Romania known as Transylvania in the Carpathian Mts. They say his body is missing from its original gravesite, which probably gave way to the legend of his being the undead. The vampire legend that Bram Stoker made so famous.

There was an actual person on whom Dracula was based. Vlad the impaler as named above. He was a murderous Psychopath and more in keeping with the Slavic Culture version of the vampire, which is a little different than what we see in the movies.

In the mind of Bram Stoker who wrote the book. Contrary to popular belief, Vlad the Impaler wasn't the inspiration but Walt Whitman was.

Dracula is a literary creation. Of course he encompasses the features of some real figures, but he is nonetheless a fictional character living probably in our imagination:)
