Having the outline done was worst, but not too much for me to ask him to stop doing it for a breather. The colouring in was almost pleasant.

Well i have three tattoos and i have a needle phobia...how bizarre is that.
The first i had took an age to do on my left shoulder blade/back and it did scratch and burn quite a bit as the guy was good but slow. A year later i had two more done at the same time.
One went on my upper arm and the other on my right shoulder blade.
The upper arm one killed me but the tattoist said the back ones should have been more painful. I assured him the arm one was the worst.
The pain doesnt last and if the tattoist is good the area is numb by the time he's done the outline so you shouldnt feel the colouring in. When the area de sensitises again, there is no pain but possibly a slight burning feeling like when you scratch somewhere for too long.

Hi Frankie - I have a tattoo of a strawberry on my left hip, about 2" wide by 3" long. Now, just to say now, I'm an utter wimp with a low pain threshold and I think the best way to describe the pain was uncomfortable. I squirmed quite a bit but the guy just kept stopping til I was more comfortable. I love my strawberry as its in a place I don't have to look at all the time, but I did think carefully before getting it done. Also did a lot of research into my 'artist'. Sounds like you're serious so I say don't think about the pain, its certainly not passing-out pain or anything! Also do your research and try to go to an artist that someone you know has used. Have fun! Bxx

yeh tattoos hurt and it depends on a couple of things --1 where you have it ,it hurts more where theres more nerves i,e the neck or the feet also if its close to the bone like the ribs or the spine ,
2 it will hurt more when you tense up so try to relax
3 it depends on who is doing the tattoo ,a good well establised artist wil cause the minimum of pain because a good tattoo will heal faster than a badly done tattoo resulting in an overall better finneshed result , have a look around for a better tattoo artist look at pictures of there work ,a good tattoo isnt cheap and a cheap tattoo isnt good ,pay the extra and get a good one it is for life

I have 2 tattoos.Yeh, they hurt a little, but we all hurt differently in different places.I have one on my ankle but my 2nd one that I got done on the top of my foot hurt more than first one.I would say the more fleshy the area is the less pain you will feel.Think long and hard before making your decision.I don't regret mine, and am hoping to get my 3rd one done this weekend when I visit Belgium.Having one done around my wrist, which is going to be bit more painful.I don't know if you are male or female, but once you've been through giving birth, a tattoo is a doddle!

Before I had mine done I asked lots of people how much it hurt and the majority said because I wanted it on my back it would be very painful. I think because I built up this image of it being really painful, when i had it done it was 10 times less painful than I thought! I'm not saying that at times it wasn't a little uncomfortable but it certainly wasn't excruciating pain. All I would say is be careful where you decide to have it and what you have done as it will be there for life and you cant get bored of it and just get rid. Choose wisely, make it a good one and good luck!!!!

Of course they hurt! but how much they hurt depends on where you have them and whether they're colour or black.
The needle they use for black ink is bigger than the one for colour, so any black bits e.g. the outline, will hurt more than the colour bits.
Yes it hurts, but if it's a design you REALLY like and are happy to have on you for the rest of your life, it's worth it. Just make sure you go to someone who has the right qualifications, and that you KNOW does really good ones. Any mistakes will be there forever, so make sure it's what you want.

I got a tattoo on my lower back when I was 16 and I wish that they had checked me properly for ID as I have regretted it for years.

It hurt loads, and really felt like someone had stuck a knife in my back and dragged it round. Because of where it was I had to kneel on the chair with my back to the tattooist and my feet kept going numb and I had to keep standing up - so it took twice as long!

The colouring in part does not hurt though - but think very seriously before you have one as it is with you for life!!

I'm so glad that you asked this question. I've been thinking about a tattoo, and been afraid of the pain. Opinions vary from the people I talked to. But overall, the response is that it is bearable.
