Joan buys a CD at 25% off. Mary buys the same CD at full price. If Mary paid four dollars more than Joan, what is the regular price of the CD?

The answer is E.
With this question all you have to do is guess and check. You multiply each posibility by 25% or 0.25 and whichever gives you an answer of 4 dollars is correct. In this case when I multiplied 16.00 by 25% I got an answer of 4 indicating the correct choice.

Let's Joan paid x (let's not put any unit here)
Mary paid x+4, and this is also full price of the CD
So, 25% discounted price is, (x+4) * (75/100)

So, we get (x+4) * (75/100) = x
or, 3(x+4) = 4x
or, x = 12
