I know that it is technically correct to put an in front of a word beginning with 'h'- at least that's what I've been told but it looks so ridiculous, but in a job application I have to put a(n) holiday club- which variation should I use?

You can say "An" hotel, but should always write "a hotel" -

The form an for the indefinite article is used before a spoken vowel sound, regardless of how the written word is spelt. If you say 'an otel' when speaking (which is now often regarded as distinctly old-fashioned), then it may be appropriate for you to write 'an hotel'; but most people say 'hotel' with a sounded 'h', and should write 'a hotel'.

Roxy - how about a link?

Anyway, both are correct in some situations, although I agree that using "an" could make you look old or pompous, or even stupid if the reader does not know that "an" can be correct.

"Even today, some people say an historic occasion or an hotel. This is a remnant of Middle English when, because of the French influence, the aitch was not articulated, making the initial syllables of these words effectively vowels."

So, "an hotel" and "an hospital" are fine, but I would say "a holiday club", as the word holiday does not have a French origin.

A hotel;
You put "An" when the word starts with a vowel, and put "A" with a word that starts with a consonant. But the are a few exceptions. Eg: "An hour"
