there are many platforms for making video games.. some are:

console games
pc games
mobile/cellphone games
arcade games

etc.

among the list, the easiest to build games is PC and Mobile.

in PC, the programming language used most is C++.. C++ is a very powerful programming language because of it's powerful OOP feature.. and takes time to master.. games such as Half-Life, Doom, Warcraft, etc. is somewhat made using this language..

in Mobile, Java is the programming language. Symbian is also used since it is the OS of most phones..

I do not know what language is used by other platforms..

hope this helps.

Learning any language is helpful as it will teach you the standard concepts of programming, algorithms, etc. Once you know the algorithm (or logical steps) to do something, you can write the program in any language. Just look up the syntax for that language.

The most commonly used programing language today is C or C++. Would recommend that as one of the languages you will want to learn. But as C is also one of the most confusing languages, starting with something like Java is a good idea. Advance to C after that.

Most comercial games are coded in C++ i believe, but if you're starting off then maybe go for Java, or how about Flash? You can create some excellent stuff with actionScript.

I recommend you download blender, it's free 3d software with great features for games creators. I'm sure there are lots of tutorials you would find interesting.

Learn as much you can from each language because each developer can pick which way to go and you do not want to be left out because you only learned C++.
When you have time just get in the habbit of learning new languages and what maked them different.
