Eggs that are sold in stores in America are mostly from White Leghorn Chickens. They lay white eggs, and the egg is actually treated before it gets to the store. (I have seen brown eggs in the store.)
Rhode Island Red, and Barred Rock chickens (along with several other breeds) lay brown eggs. In Europe they use these type as well as other names for these.
Before we raised chickens I didn't even want to taste the brown eggs but once I did, they are so much richer in taste.
I have to disagree with Robert J, the chicken doesn't decide whether it has a white or brown egg....it is determined by the breed. Our hens lay about 5-6 eggs a day, everyday. In the hot summer months they don't lay as many but they still lay.

Just local preference. Chickens can be bred to lay white eggs or brown. A lot of people in New England prefer brown eggs, but southerners usually prefer white.
The guy talking about how many eggs chickens lay is no chicken farmer. A chicken will typically lay one egg a day for three or four days and then take a day off. Can you blame her?

It's down to the populations preference over anything else, parts of Europe like brown eggs whilst it is seen that the US like white eggs!
Then it is down to different chickens for the preferred colour. Strange but true.

That settles it - Europe is better than the States because Europe has brown eggs (and also because they make their "7s" with little lines through the middle).

Its based mostly on what type of chicken is popular in the area. It is also based that the marketing folk feel americans expect their eggs to be pure white to the extent that the eggs are often "ENHANCED" in color.
