If you don't mind sleeping on futon mattresses on the tatami floor, for lodging, may I suggest you stay in Ryokans. They are tranditional and they serve Japanese food for dinner and breakfast.

I agree with the other answer on visiting Kyoto. I spent a week there - the traditional temples and shrines are a wonder to behold - You can view several sites that have been used in recent movies such as Memoirs of a Geisha and The Last Samurai.

If you go in through the main train station, the street that leads north from there is THE main shopping area. Just before you get to the center of the city there is a HUGE shopping mall. To the west side and north of there is the old Imperial Palace and on the east side of the river that goes thought he city is the geisha quarter.

There are hundreds of museums and so many places to eat that you will not get bored or hungry! I went with $1000US and came home with lots of gifts for people and a couple of bucks. Even the cabs to get around town (though you can walk if you want - things are easy to find) weren't that expensive.

Remember to brush up as much as possible on your Japanese! Even knowing how to say "I'm sorry, I don't understand." Will help! Having more than one person along is a good thing - you can pratice your Japanese with each other... start now. You'll need it!

There are many wonderful things to see in Japan. If you love hiking hike MT. Fuji i think its open around this time of year. Shopping, eating, traveling and getting hotels are expensive in Japan. a $20 meal in the states can turn into a $40 meal in Japan and you dont get as much food as you would in the states!!!!! I think i paid $15 at Mcdonalds for a double cheese burger, fries and a chocolate shake. All large all about as big as my fist and the large drink looked like a small or medium in American size. Definitly get alot of travelers checks and cash them at local banks to get a better yen rate! They have cheap hotels that look like slots for you to sleep in but its no Marriott.

If you dont know Japanese get a electronic translator...if you really want to look cool get one that actually talks.....it works wonders when you dont know how to pronounce words.

I hope this helps you and Gambatte! (Good Luck!)

Japan is costly........especially Tokyo so plan for downtowns or country side places like NARA for example.

In Tokyo you will find hotels not less than 15,000~25,000 Yen a night and a good sea-food with a couple of beers for 2-3 persons would be around 4,000~5,000 per sitting.

What I suggest is that you stay in the down towns like NARA or KASHIHARA . You will find that food & stay is comparatively cheaper. For that you get the airticket to OSAKA instead of TOKYO (from your place of departure) and then travel by train (train tickets cost you 400 to 3500 Yen per person...one side). Train Pass will be a cheaper option but for that you will have to show your passport that you are on a short trip (for a month or so). Hotel stay would be around 8,000~10,000 per night per person.

From NARA you can go OSAKA (there is a place called NAMBA in Osaka where all young people gather & enjoy food, drinks and music) or Todaiji Temple and other shrines and even plan for HIROSHIMA.

Good Luck!

SHIBUYA! that is such an awesome place. Trust me, ive lived there almost all my life. The night life is so great there. if you have watched one of the recent seasons of Amazing Race, they went to shibuya. same with one of the seasons of america's next top model. i recommend the trains. i love it. you can probably find a good hotel here on yahoo travel. plus theres plenty of reviews there too. the malls are nice, but there are more to shopping then just malls. theres so many amazing shopping places there! there are many restos there, so i cant just recommend one. just whatever you see is good just go there. the food is great too. tokyo is great too.

Which city in Tokyo? There better than 50 there. prepare pass is properly worth provided which you employ Shinkansen better than going from Tokyo to Osaka and back. It won't be able for use for Tokyo Metro, yet there are different JR traces. besides the fact that it could make Tokyo transportation greater complicated in case you won't have the ability to apply Metro. it is stressful too say what you could pass to, it is fairly own and too many places for 11 days. a minimum of in case you're unlikely to Japan for examine record, if so you could basically open some record of "ought to pass to" places . There are mountains in the west of Tokyo and sub-tropical islands in the south of Tokyo. you could walk around of needed Tokyo, pass to Minato with Odaiba, Asakusa, Shinjuku and Shibuya, pass to wester Tokyo cities like Tama, Hachiouji, Mitaka. in my opinion for me Kyoto is uninteresting, in case you have seen 3-5 temples they grow to be each of an identical. and you will discover hordes of human beings, maximum of them are different vacationers. For me, places to pass to are Izu islands, Fuji and Tateyama mountains, Nikko(in autumn). Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara are sturdy for strolling or maybe better cycling with out any specific place, basically looking around.
