What type of stitching? For counted cross stitch the basics are a needle- Tapestry which has a oval eye and blunt tip, Embroidery/crewel which has a oval eye and sharp tip, and sharps which have a sharp tip. You also need a embroidery scissors which is much smaller then a fabric scissors to snip your threads. A hoop which goes on your fabric one on top and one on the bottom to hold your fabric taunt or a scroll frame which is 2 round wooden dowels and 2 spacers, or q-snaps which are made of pvc plastic. While stitching good light is necessary . Floresent lighting is preferred and found in the brand name Dazor. Also some need to use a magnifier for small linen work

There are only 3 things necessary for stitching.
1.a needle- I point piece of metal, wood, plastic, bone....with a hole in one side to insert the thread.
2. Thread- Fine strands of cotton, rayon, nylon, sinew, plastic....
3. Object to be sewn- anything that you can put the needle and thread through
