it's so hard to pick a favorite, because there are so many great anime that i've seen, but i'll try.
i think i'll have to go with planetes at the moment. it's a sci-fi series set in the near future, in a time when space exploration has grown to such an extent that we have dozens of space stations in orbit that are for both government and commercial use. there is also an established colony on the moon and the first manned flight to mars has just been accomplished. as a result of all this space traffic, there is a large amount of waste and debris floating around, which has started to cause some major problems. the story is about a group of astronauts that work in debris section, who's duty is to clean up space so it's safe to travel in. it's a great story and the charachter development is done so well that you can't help but be drawn in. and it focuses more on the charachters, and less on the actual sci-fi, which a nice change. also, no giant robots or hyper-drives. it's all very realistic. ships are faster, but it still takes almost a week to get to the moon, and years to get to mars. also the space suits are huge and bulky. the touch of realism really made the series enjoyable. you should check it out.

Cartoons are animation and nobody calls it American-Animation and they like it...Cartoons made in Japan are called Japanese-Animation and some people disagree on it...dunno why but it's not bad...pornographic cartoons are being made in the US and they say Japan is bad...not ALL japanese anime are bad. they're a lot that give such loving messages for children and adults can learn from they're message as well...
I used to HATE anime but after realizing that not all are as bad as i thought, i started to like it even more...i like drawing a lot and anime is one of them, i sketch and animate and make stories that kids will undertsand...i also have fave's
Fullmeatal Alchemist - it's full of mystery, comedy, action and it gives a good message...love your friends, take care of your family because they're the only thing you'll have at the end...
Cardcaptor Sakura - action, comedy and great for kids! it tells you to protect the people you love and be a hero, even if it's small...
Twin Spica - Comedy and Belief...it tells us not to give up on our dreams, either to become an astronaut or just something people think might not be right for you...dont let things keep you down, lots of obstacles will stop you but always continue to achieve so you can be successful...
i love these 3!...they have a great message and that's why i love anime, for the good reasons!..there may be some bad ones but i'll only watch the good shows because i know which is right or wrong...

My favourite anime:
-Ranma 1/2-It has everything action, comedy, love, suspense etc. It is one of the best anime I have ever seen.It is wacky. Ranma and Akane's love hate relationship, their silly friends\rivals, is really very nice.
-UFO Baby-I love it because how Miyu, Kanata,Baby Lou, Wanniya an instant 4 persons family get together so well. Kanata and Miyu assist Baby Lou and Wanniyaand often go to great lengths to help and protect them. their friends end up to funny and comedic situation.
-Princess Tutu-After watching this anime I was crazy about ballet. I like its message never give up hope.
-Flash Kicker-It is so good. You got to see Tsubasa's passion for soccer. His journey to become a world soccer player. His spirit of fair play, courage, friendship and especially his golden shots are thrillig.
-Princess Comet- Princess Comet from planet Harmonica is sent to earth to find the prince. Her journey to Earth, the people she meets, and her journey to find the prince. She learns many thing about earth and its people. it is really interesting.
I also like Midori days, Card captor Sakura etc...
ANIME ROCKS!!!

My fav anime is The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. I like because the story is quite interesting. Well i like the novel so maybe because of it. But The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi anime is really a big boom on Japan. Watch it and you'll like it (or hate it, like the other that hate the kind of story)

Naruto!! Everyone loves Naruto! Haha its about this lil rascal of a ninja with a demon in his body. Even though the filler episodes are wayy offtrack from the manga, but rumour has it, it will be back with the storyline

hagane no renkinjutsushi (fma) -- it teaches you a lot about how you should live life. futari wa arukitsuzukeru ato ni wa modorenai kara ima demo kono mune no oku kesenai tsumi wa itamu kedo darling.
ouran koukou host club --it's a shounen anime.(shounen not shounen ai) morinozuka takashi and haninozuka mitsukuni are very kawaii.^^ and the hitachiin twins! and the host club is really funny.
nana -- it's a shoujou anime. (shoujou not shoujou ai) nana and nana/hachi are very kawaii. the story is very meaningful and the opening and ending songs are really nice.^^
spiral: suiri no kizuna -- it's very intellectual, but i hate the ending
noir -- mireille and kirika are really great assassins

Sailor Moon is pretty hot. BTW, there's a great semi-sexy program called "Colorful" that's a little racy but fun.

kyo kara maoh is the best to me. I like it because I love Wolfram the cutest blondie in the serie.^^
