Anger affects different people in different ways.Mostly how you deal with it depends on your upbringing. If you grew up in a violent home where there was yelling, quarreling and fighting between your parents then you are bound to turn violent when angry.
But one can learn to control one's anger.
I look at anger as a form of energy.Channel that anger into doing something positive. If you work channel it into your work or to the gymn and hit a punch til it says "Ouch!!!"

Never bottle it in. When you get too much bottled in, you will either let loose on someone for no apparent reason or have a mental breakdown. If you can convince yourself that the thing that made you angry either really doesn't matter or that there is no way that you can take control of it, you can successfully just "let it go". Otherwise, you should calmly address the issue by letting the person know in a polite way that they have made you angry with their words or actions.

Anger has to be let out, but in a controlled fashion. I sometimes hit the pillow hard to let it out. You could try other ways.
Also you should evaluate what gets you irritated and try to avoid those situations as much as possible

You should never bottle it up, but calm down before you deal with the problem. That way you should be able to talk it through without a huge flaire up.

If you know the true source of the anger, try and resolve it by dealing with it effectively...if you can't and its tearing you apart, try and re-focus...do something...let it wash away by being productive....don't bottle it because it might end up exploding and it might be mis-directed.

Talk!
I find the best thing to do is to bite your tongue, hold back anger while in the situation.
Anger can lead to flippant decisions often with consequences.
Then, after the incident, if you still feel angry, talk to someone. It depends on what the anger is about as to whom you talk to/confide in.

I've learn to bottle it in because when I let it go out I say things I don't really mean and I regret it later.

Let it out in a safe direction, like sports, or music.
I listen to heavy metal music and sing/scream along with it. It vents my anger really well.

let it out in a controled manner. Don't hit anyone. My favourite is to put Bohemian Rhapsody on really loud and jump around going crazy for 5 minutes. Its really relaxing
