Fear, sloth, and the idea that tomorrow is another day...to do what you didn't do today. (and tomorrow, as we all know, never comes)

Fear of change.
Fear of failure.

What is your goal? If your goal is to be president, you can get off your butt, and get a degree, and try to run for office, but how likely is it you will be elected?

Isn't it a bit arrogant to suggest that the reason goals aren't reached is because of laziness? What about lack of resource? If you have to go to work at 14 to help put food on the table, and try to put some money aside for college, do you think that a Harvard education is possible? Maybe, but if you apply for every scholarship, do your best in school but are still a "C" student (not everyone is an A student, you have to have the brains), maybe Harvard doesn't accept you - but you got off your butt.

If you want to be an artist, or an athlete, but don't have the talent, grit and determination will take you so far, but probably not into a career.

Fear of failure! It truly sounds like an oxymoron, if they would attempt to fulfill their goals they would stand a better chance of achieving their goal, but by doing nothing they have actually already failed.

A good deal of people at least in America stumble through life, I think it is less than 2% actually write down their goals. My family makes fun of me often because I have utilized the Nike slogan before it ever surfaced in their commericals "Just Do It"

Lack of self-belief. They doubt they will ever achieve what they set out to do and give up because they lose their motivation. I've seen some people fail at uni because they found subjects too hard, we all did! But some of us really applied ourselves while others gave up. Usual excuse was "I'm simply not good enough" when they would have been had they decided to go for it, work hard, study hard and told themslves "I can do this and i'm going to do it" Because that's how the rest of us got our degree!

There are a lot of reasons why people don't. Apathy, doubt, fear. It would hard to pick just one reason why. Some people might even not reach their goals because deep down they really don't want to achieve them.

anxiety is the distance between where you are and where you think you should be. seeing life as having "goals" is living life of stress and anxiety. the answer to your question? just say 'no' to setting goals. first be, after that become, and after that have it as a goal.

Lack of money or drive.

Additionally, a belief in "God" or a "heaven" can reduce your desire for success in the "here and now".
