Night flying insects are thought to use the moon as a navigational aid and so are attracted to light that looks like the moon. White light, especially ultraviolet, attracts them while they seem to be unaffected by yellow light.
Insect's eyes adapt much more slowly to changes in light than a humans. So when they come to the light source and then try to fly away, they are blinded and cannot find their way, much in the same way if you go from a very bright room out into the dark you are temporarily blinded, for flys and moths this blindness lasts longer.
It was discovered that a statue in southern Italy which has a broken light on it, attracted around 5 million macro-moths per year.
You may also have noticed that nocturnal spiders build their webs on or near light posts. They seem to know that an abundance of food is going to come to them automatically.

most daytime insects ar "wired" to keep their back up to the sun, with small variations. Indeed this is a pretty good way of flying straight and other things, it is like an automated line of flight if you want.
now at night, a lamp becomes the main source of light. An insect flying away from the lamp will feel the intensity of the light decrease, so its "automatic wiring" will make it curve its flight to it maintains a roughly constant distance to the lamp. This ends up in making the insect fly around the lamp.
guess evolution had not planned that insects would have to cope with artificial sources of light ;-)

Flies do no longer "see." they're bugs. bugs have eyes that are a different detector than human eyes. the explanation is instinct. maximum flying bugs in an enclosed area have a in-built charm to warmer factors. Their antennae hit upon very smaller ameliorations in temperature than great(r) animals, and around a ceiling easy is warmer than different places intense interior the room. seek for a fly swatter at a save, purchase one, and get rid of flies, particularly of watching them. The study on flies had each and all the counsel you may elect to comprehend tens of years in the past.

Good question. I'm sorry that I don't know the answer. I also thought they were attracted by the heat, but they still do it when the light is switched off so this can't be the case.

They do that in here when I have left the back door open. It drives me crazy! They seem to chase each other round it as well. It is during the daytime, when the light isn't even on!
