I really liked, I believe it was called The Poison Belt--sequel to The Lost World, but related only by the characters.

ETA: Hang on, I read that wrong--I was putting up a Doyle story that wasn't Sherlock Holmes.

Hmm. In that case, try this lovely piece, out of the Shadows Over Baker Street collection: http://www.neilgaiman.com/exclusive/shortstories/emerald.pdf

Graphic novels by Michael Reaves - Shadows Over Baker Street: New Tales of Terror! - excellent take on Sherlock Holmes, but doesnt compare with the original. There were a series of weird Sherlock Holmes adaptations in the late 30's and 40's where the character was used for a series of propoganda films during the war, such as Sherlock Holmes and the voice of terror / secret weapon and so on.

Micheal Dibdin and other authors have also tried to carry on where conan-doyle left of with offerings such as The Last Sherlock Holmes Story....

I just finished Laurie R. King's Mary Russell mystery series about a young woman detective who meets and is taught by and then later marries Sherlock Holmes. They're great books.

Mary Russell, a teen-age student of Sherlock Holmes, is featured in:

The Beekeeper’s Apprentice (1994)

A Monstrous Regiment of Women (1995)

A Letter of Mary (1996)

The Moor (1998)

O Jerusalem (1999)

Justice Hall (2002)

The Game (2004)

Locked Rooms (2005)

My own personal favourite is The Seven Per Cent Solution by Nicolas Meyer. Holmes gets treated for his Cocaine addiction by Sigmund Freud and prevents a war among other things. A good read.
